Garden tidy-ups

Neatly trimmed green hedge running alongside a suburban footpath and stone wall

Gardens do not get messy overnight — they get messy a little bit every week until one day the weeds are knee-high and the shrubs have swallowed the path. A garden tidy-up from M&H-mowing resets things: weeds out, shrubs shaped, hedges trimmed, beds edged, and the whole garden looking like itself again.

Tidy-ups suit a few familiar situations. The pre-sale spruce-up before photos and open homes. The rental that needs to meet a healthy-homes inspection. The garden that thrived a little too well over a wet Canterbury spring. Or simply the twice-a-year reset — once in autumn after leaf fall, once in spring before the growing season — that keeps an established garden under control without weekly effort.

What a tidy-up covers

  • Hand weeding of beds, paths and paved areas
  • Trimming and shaping of small shrubs and hedges
  • Cutting back overgrowth from paths, fences and windows
  • Pruning of dead or damaged growth on ornamentals
  • Re-defining bed edges where the lawn has crept in
  • All green waste gathered and removed from site

Hedges deserve a special mention. A box, pittosporum or griselinia hedge that is trimmed little and often will stay dense right to the base; one that is left for years goes woody and bare. Regular light trimming after a tidy-up keeps hedges thick, even and easy to maintain — far cheaper than removing and replanting a hedge that got away.

Every tidy-up ends with a full clear-down: clippings raked, paths swept, and the green waste taken away so you are left with the result, not the mess. Combine it with a mow and the whole section is done in a single visit.
