Autumn clean-up checklist for Christchurch lawns

Autumn in Christchurch arrives fast: one week the lawn is still growing, the next the deciduous trees have buried it. A proper autumn clean-up is the highest-value garden job of the year — a weekend of the right tasks now saves months of recovery in spring. Here is the checklist we work through.

1. Get the leaves off the grass

A blanket of autumn leaves smothers the grass underneath, blocking light and trapping moisture against the blades. Left for weeks, it leaves yellow dead patches that take all spring to fill back in. Rake or blow leaves off the lawn regularly through the fall, not just once at the end — and get them off paths and drains too, where wet leaves turn slippery and block stormwater.

2. Give hedges and shrubs their last trim

Late autumn is the moment for the final shape-up of hedges and fast-growing shrubs before winter dormancy. Growth has slowed, so a trim now holds its line for months. It also lets more winter light into beds and windows, which makes a surprising difference on short Canterbury days.

3. Re-cut the edges one last time

Edges creep fastest in the shoulder seasons. A final edge along paths, driveways and beds in autumn locks in clean lines that survive winter intact, so the section still looks cared for even when nothing is growing.

4. Lower the mower for the last cuts

As growth slows, the final mows of autumn can step the height down gradually. Going into winter slightly shorter reduces the risk of fungal issues in long, damp grass — but avoid scalping, which exposes the crowns to frost.

5. Take the waste away
